Disappearing Into Blue | 100 x 100cm

This is one of my favourite ancient bluebell woods, and somewhere I love to visit when spring arrives.
For a few short weeks, the woodland floor disappears beneath a carpet of blue. The trees are beginning to wake up, the light starts to change and the whole place feels different.
It’s tucked away, and hardly anyone goes there. If I stay quiet, I might see the odd deer making its way through the trees, almost disappearing into the bluebells.
Usually, though, I have the place to myself.
There’s the spring breeze moving through the branches, birds calling to each other and the gentle hum of insects busy among the flowers.
That’s what I wanted to capture in this painting — not just the bluebells, but the feeling of being there. Standing quietly in the woods, taking it all in and noticing the little things happening around you.
Bluebells have traditionally been associated with everlasting love, gratitude and humility. They’re also known as ‘fairy flowers’, which seems entirely appropriate when you find yourself standing in a woodland like this.
Spring doesn’t last for long. The bluebells eventually disappear, the leaves fill the trees and the woodland changes again.
But for those few weeks, it’s a pretty special place to be.
And that’s the moment I wanted to hold on to.
